Why Clarity Matters Now

Most California community college students do not transfer on the timeline they hoped for. Public Policy Institute of California research reports that only 11% of students transferred within two years of initial enrollment, and the California State Auditor found that only about 21% of transfer-intending students transferred within four years.

Road2four exists to help students build a clear plan early, stay on track, and give themselves the best possible shot at transferring on time to the right UC, CSU, or private institution. This is not about rushing. It's about being strategic, intentional, and accountable.

One Wrong Course Sequence Can Cost You a Semester

In California alone, there are at least 13,572 community-college-to-university transfer pairings before you even factor in majors, articulation, and campus-specific requirements. Most students do not transfer on the timeline they hoped for: only 11% transfer within two years, and only about 21% of transfer-intending students transfer within four years.

Road2four is built to help you get the plan right earlier.

Why Not Just Use Free Advising?

Transfer centers and college counselors are valuable resources. They provide important support and should absolutely be part of your transfer journey. Road2four is built to complement that support with more continuity, personalization, and strategy.

Limited Availability

According to the 2024–25 California Community Colleges Transfer Center Report, only 54% of transfer centers offer evening hours, just 3% offer weekend hours, and only 29% are open more than 40 hours per week.

For working students, part-time students, and students balancing life responsibilities, these narrow access windows can make it hard to get the support you need when you need it.

Personalization at Scale

The same report shows that the average transfer center has just 1.3 dedicated counselors (excluding the director), and 70% of transfer centers are co-located rather than dedicated standalone centers.

Counselors are helping many students within real structural constraints. Deep, individualized planning for each student's unique situation is difficult to sustain at scale.

Continuity & Follow-Through

In the 2024–25 report, only 44% of colleges reported fully implementing monitoring of transfer students all the way to the point of transfer.

Many colleges provide excellent information and planning help upfront, but sustained tracking and transfer follow-through are less consistently implemented. Students can drift or lose momentum between semesters.

Strategic Complexity

Official advising is essential, but students still have to navigate UC TAP/TAG, CSU impacted majors, private transfer, articulation systems like ASSIST, major prerequisites, application timing, and competitive positioning across multiple institutions. That's a lot to interpret and coordinate on your own.

The Road2four Difference

We add what free advising alone often can't:

  • Continuity across semesters — you work with the same advisor, not different people each time
  • Accountability and check-ins — we track your progress and keep you on track
  • Strategic interpretation — not just information, but strategic guidance tailored to your goals
  • Timely feedback — responsive support when you need it, not when an advisor has availability
  • Specialized support — for competitive campuses, impacted majors, and nontraditional paths

The Bottom Line

Free advising is a strong starting point. Road2four is for students who want a clearer plan, more responsive support, and more consistent follow-through when the stakes are high.
